Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways open to more stake buys: CEO

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - Etihad Airways, the Abu Dhabi-based carrier which has been on a recent acquisition spree, is eyeing further investments if the right opportunity arises, its chief executive said on Sunday, adding 2012 revenue could top $5 billion for the first time.

"We see further equity investments only if it's the right opportunity, right partner, right market and right price," James Hogan, Etihad's chief executive said at an aviation conference in the United Arab Emirates' capital.

Unlisted Etihad has been on an acquisition drive in recent months, taking minority equity stakes in Virgin Australia and Aer Lingus and raising its shareholding in Air Berlin and Air Seychelles.

Any future acquisitions would follow the same theme, with Etihad not interested in majority ownership, Hogan said, adding that the airline will continue to extend its codeshare network, which contributes around 20 percent of its revenue.

"Our equity model is about growth, not control," Hogan said.

"Through partners, we stretch our reach and it gives us the ability to compete with our immediate neighbors," he said, in a reference to major rivals, Dubai-based Emirates and Qatar Airways.

Etihad's revenue this year is expected to pass the $5 billion mark for the first time, despite the wider aviation sector being under pressure from the global economic downturn and high fuel costs, Hogan said.

The airline, which had revenues of $4.1 billion in 2011, generated $281 million in revenues from partnerships in the first half of 2012, he said.

Root and Recovery for the Sony Xperia T

Root and Recovery for the Sony Xperia T

It is always exciting when a new device is rooted. It means that users can enjoy the freedom of a rooted device, usually resulting in options such as custom recoveries, and so on. Of course, it?s always better when a device gets both at once. The Sony Xperia T is the latest device to get both root and recovery.

The method is something many of us have dealt with before. It involves unlocking the device?s bootloader and installing an insecure kernel. XDA Recognized Contributor krabappel2548?released an insecure kernel that helps get users rooted. The kernel features include:

- Autoroot
- Busybox
- Init.d support
- Insecure
- Debuggable
- CWM included

To install it, you?ll need the Android SDK. From there, download the kernel and place it in the same folder with ADB and Fastboot. Then, use Terminal or Command Prompt to flash it via Fastboot.

There are actually two kernels available. One for root and a second for root and recovery. Additionally, krabappel2548 has included the stock kernel. If you?d like to know more, go to the original thread.

Earthquakes rally to tie FC Dallas

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:32 a.m. ET Sept. 30, 2012

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Steven Lenhart scored two goals, including the tying score in second-half stoppage time as the San Jose Earthquakes rallied for a 3-3 draw with FC Dallas on Saturday night.

Lenhart headed home a ball flicked on by Alan Gordon, from a cross by Justin Morrow, five minutes into stoppage time to keep San Jose's unbeaten streak at Buck Shaw Stadium intact. The Earthquakes have gone 11-0-6 at their primary venue since Aug. 13, 2011.

Alan Gordon also scored for San Jose (18-6-7), which inched to three points ahead of Sporting Kansas City in the Supporters' Shield standings.

Blas Perez scored in the 37th and 72nd minutes for FC Dallas (9-12-10), and Matt Hedges added one in the 88th minute. Dallas lost an opportunity to tie Vancouver for the fifth and final Western Conference playoff spot, remaining two points back with three matches remaining.

Gordon put San Jose up 1-0 in 24th minute and, after Dallas went ahead, Lenhart tied it in the 82nd.

San Jose has 12 game-winning or tying goals in the 82nd minute or later this season. It was the Earthquakes' league-record ninth goal in second-half stoppage time this year.

Hedges appeared to give Dallas the much-needed victory when he slotted home into an empty net after a desperate goalmouth clearance from San Jose defender Victor Bernardez fell to him at 4 yards.

Lenhart's first goal also came courtesy of Gordon, who laid off a square pass at the top of Dallas' box. Lenhart ran onto the ball and beat Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman with a left-footed shot.

Perez cut between San Jose's central defenders to head home a go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute, knocking in David Ferreira's pass.

San Jose is unbeaten in six consecutive MLS matches, and also in six straight against FC Dallas, dating back to June 2010.

ICC World T20: Australia pleased with recent win over India ? Cricket News Update

Having secured a comprehensive 9-wicket win over India in the ongoing ICC World Twenty20 2012, Australia are understandably pleased with the solid start to the Super Eights stage, with skipper George Bailey lauding the team for their ?impressive performance?.

?It was an impressive performance,? said George Bailey, after his team?s victory at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on September 28. ?Set up by some good bowling. Patty [Cummins] was outstanding, the best we have seen him bowl in this tournament so far.?

The match kicked off with India, fresh from their massive 90-run victory over England, winning the toss and electing to bat first. However, having opted to rest Virender Sehwag in favour of playing an extra specialist spinner, the Indian batting order was considerably weakened, and troubled as they were by young pacer Pat Cummins (4-0-16-2) and all-rounder Shane Watson (4-0-34-3), the Men in Blue only managed a final total of 140.

When it came to the batting, despite Bailey?s insistence that Australia are not entirely dependent on Watson, the fact remains that the all-rounder has been the driving force behind his team?s victories in the tournament so far, and this game was no different.

Chasing 141, Australia faced no trouble as Watson top-scored with 72 at the top of the order, in addition to setting up a 133-run stand with fellow opener David Warner (63*), which won him the Player of the Match award and enabled Australia to clinch a massive 9-wicket victory.

?The last couple of games have been pretty good,? said Watson. ?It's nice when things come together like this. Probably batting is a bit more enjoyable ... but enjoying being an all-rounder.?

Bailey was also all-praise for the openers, whose partnership saw them becoming the first pair to have scored more than a 1000 T20I partnership runs.

?The absolute beauty of those two openers is, that when they are on, there are no better hitters,? observed Bailey.

However, despite the victory, which sees Australia continuing their unbeaten run in the ongoing competition, Bailey stressed the need for the team to avoid a complacent attitude, and carry the same momentum into their upcoming match against South Africa, due to be played at the same venue on September 30.

?As good as this win is, we have to be up and ready for South Africa,? he insisted.

Elizabeth Warren 2002 ? Working on at least 10 private legal matters

Represents her office is in Cambridge, MA

Defenders of Elizabeth Warren?s failure to obtain a Massachusetts law license have argued that Warren did not operate an office for the practice of law or maintain a systematic and continuous presence in Massachusetts for the practice of law because all she allegedly did was help write a few Briefs in the Supreme Court and out-of-state federal courts.

Michael Fredrickson, General Counsel of the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers even took the unusual move of giving media interviews defending Warren before any investigation, suggesting that a law professor who merely ?dabbles? in legal consulting doesn?t need to be licensed.? Fredrickson later clarified that he merely was expressing a personal opinion, and that he really didn?t know much about Warren?s practice.

The Warren campaign refuses to detail the full scope of Warren?s private legal activities from her Cambridge office, but details are being uncovered day by day.? Much as with Warren?s history of ?checking the box,? Warren?s campaign makes categorical statements, refuses to release records, and waits to see if others will be able to find details and documents.

The evidence mounts day by day that Warren did a lot more than ?dabble? in the practice of law from her Massachusetts office.?? Among other things, Warren represented to the Texas Bar that Cambridge was her ?primary practice location,??in 2002 billed over $14,000 for ?professional legal services? in?the GAF bankruptcy case, ?and even entered a court appearance for a Massachusetts client in 2001 on Massachusetts legal issues in a federal court in Massachusetts.

More details are coming out about the extensive nature of Warren?s private practice.

In a March 20, 2002,?Verified Statement?(embedded at bottom of post), Warren submitted in the Kaiser Aluminum bankruptcy, Warren detailed for the Court the extensive nature of her law practice at that time, which included at least 9 bankruptcy matters plus other legal work.

Interestingly, Warren disclosed?that she had advised Dow Chemical Company,?in keeping with?a long history of representing large corporate entities:

10. ?. In addition to these academic and legislative activities, have consulted with a?number of companies on mass tort issues. I served in an advisory capacity to Dow Chemical, the?parent company of Dow Coming, in the early days of the Dow Coming bankruptcy I have?assisted the Johns Manville ?rust and the National Gypsum Trust in appellate litigation. I have?been an expert witness on behalf of the National Gypsum Trust and the Fuller Austin trust.? These trusts were formed as part of the confirmation of a plan of reorganization in mass tort?asbestos bankruptcies. I have assisted in the preparation for petitions for certiorari to the United?States Supreme Court in two cases involving future claims, one in an environmental context and?one in an employee liability context. I have argued a case on behalf of Fairchild Aviation, an?airplane manufacturer facing future claims liability. I have filed an amicus brief in future claims?litigation involving Piper Aircraft. [Note - it appears there was a paragraph numbering problem in the original, and that the above paragraph was supposed to be numbered "11"]

12. In addition, I am working with Caplin & Drysdale as a consultant in Chapter 11?proceedings involving the Babcock & Wilcox Company, Pittsburgh Coming Corporation, Owens?Coming Corporation, Armstrong World Industries, Inc., W.R. Grace & Company, G-1 Holdings, Inc., United States Gypsum Corporation, Federal-Mogul Global, Inc. and North American?Refractories Company.

In addition to the nine bankruptcy cases, we also know that Warren was working on the ?FCC v. Nextwave Communications case detailed in my original post.? Even if none of the additional matters listed in paragraph 10 of Warren?s Verified Statement were active in 2002, that would mean Warren was involved in handling a minimum of 10 active private legal matters during 2002.

That hardly is ?dabbling? in the practice of law.? Of course, there may be more, but the Warren campaign will not disclose anything other than the few Supreme Court briefs she worked on.

It is significant that Warren informed the Court in the opening paragraph that she was admitted in Texas, but did not inform the Court that she had been on inactive status since 1992.? Additionally, Warren designated her Cambridge location as her office in connection with this retention:

There are other interesting details in the Verified Statement which will be explored in future posts, such as the Harvard disclosure and reporting requirements, the guidelines limiting faculty to spending 20% of their time on non-law school related matters, and this admonition from the Harvard Law School Faculty Manual in effect in 2001-2002 against the unauthorized practice of law:

The investigation will continue.

[Special thanks to Morgen Richmond, who used to blog at Verum Serum, for helping locate documents referred to here and which will be referred to in?upcoming posts.]

She'll knock you out with the cute. Boom. Flat on your butt.

Okay, so I?m a tad bit late in getting a project finished. Shocking I know with the amount of crafting, cooking/baking, and DIY?ing that I do. Pinterest, for example, is a fantastical place to be inspired and get ideas for all of the aforementioned.

Except at the rate that I (and all others it would seem) am ?pinning,? the reality of making all of those Pins happen? Doing all those projects? Not happening. I would much rather waste my time in the dark recesses of video editing; cutting and snipping and gathering and knitting together a fabric of show-stopping magnificence. When I say ?show-stopping magnificence,? this is not to be attributed with my mad video editing skillz. Not in the least! I?m referring, rather, to the little?people?that I have born. The ones who my make my everyday a huge event. It?s in their company that I want to savour every moment in the present and capture enough memories to savour when I?m old and grey. To share with them and their children in the years to come. To share with their friends, g-rents, extended family all other adoring fans who aren?t lucky enough to savour the everyday.

It?s important to build up all of the gooey, golden moments and treasure them like the huge shining beams of awesome that they are. It?s what helps us (me anyways), get through the less than savoury moments of which there are a plenty.?I?ve posted the video on my personal blog today. This was a project that I had meant to publish in honour of Abby?s 1st birthday. So while I may be a couple of months late, who?s really counting??Surely, not she.

Baby shower? So 2010. Edgier moms-to-be have a baby gender reveal

Forget the baby shower. It's a ... "gender reveal!" For moms-to-be who want drama in their shower of baby gadgetry, gender reveal parties let everyone ? including Mom ? find out the sex of the baby together. "Huh?" asks our pregnant blogger.

By Stephanie Hanes,?Correspondent / September 27, 2012

Baby shower? Not for Shainna and Bryan Pickens who ? like a growing number of moms-to-be (and dads) ? announced the sex of their unborn child June 22, 2012 to a group of about 20 by having guests bite into cupcakes: blue butter dream filling revealed the Charleston, W. V., couple would be having a boy.

Silly Mommy. How 2010 of you. Today, baby showers are the least of it.

RELATED: Top 5 bullying myths - What you don't know about bullying

Or so I learned the other week, lying on that super comfy ultrasound bed for one of the more interesting pre-natal checkups; the one that not only determines whether your baby-to-be has all his/her fingers and toes, but also what sex organs he/she happens to boast.?

?Do you want to know what you?re having?? the friendly ultrasound technician asked.

"Heck yeah," I answered.? My husband and I were expecting this question, and, not exactly the patient types, already knew our answer. (Check out our post from earlier this year about the stats on who ?finds out? and who doesn?t.)?

And then she asked: ?Do you want me to tell you now or write it down?? You know, for your gender reveal??

Huh??

(Actually, I thought she said ?gender unveil,? but that might have been an accent issue. We?re not from Massachusetts.)

Yes, the ?gender reveal,? she explained. It?s all the rage these days. You have a party where your family and friends are dragged once again to pay homage to the bump (OK, she just said ?come to celebrate?) and at the best dramatic moment, you open the envelop (or look in the cake, or lift a curtain, or whatever) and discover whether to paint the nursery pink or blue.

Seriously.

Husband and I exchanged looks.

?Really?? I asked.

It was all I could muster.

?I know, I know,? she said.

Like any professional researcher, when I got home I turned immediately to Google. Sure enough, authoritative mommy sites from WhatToExpect.com to BabyCenter.com to Pinterest have lists of Gender Reveal ideas and party tips. There are entire websites and books devoted to this.

?Expecting a new baby is a very exciting time for a couple,? writes www.genderreveal.net. ?One of the most thrilling parts of pregnancy is revealing the gender of your beautiful little bundle. Don?t announce it just by making a phone call to your family and friends. Make your baby gender reveal party a big, wonderful, landmark event in your life by holding a well-planned baby gender reveal party. Celebrate the arrival of the newest addition in your family with all your friends and loved ones.?

There are plenty of ideas out there for a rockin? Gender Reveal.? One is to give the secret envelop to the party?s cake maker, who then brings out either a pink or blue cake at just the right moment in the party.

There?s the balloon approach, where the Keeper-Of-The-Ultrasound-Envelope orders a huge box of either pink or blue balloons, to be opened by the parents-to-be in front of guests.

Higher gas costs push US consumer spending up

(AP Photo/Sitthixay Ditthavong, File)

(AP) ? Americans boosted their spending in August even though their income barely grew. Much of the spending increase went to pay higher gas prices, which may have forced consumers to cut back elsewhere.

The Commerce Department said Friday that consumer spending rose 0.5 percent in August from July. It was the biggest jump since February.

Gas prices rose nearly 50 cents per gallon in July and August, but have since leveled off. Excluding the impact of higher gas prices and other price gains, spending ticked up only 0.1 percent last month.

Income grew only 0.1 percent, too. But after accounting for inflation and deducting taxes, income actually fell 0.3 percent ? the poorest performance since November.

The increase in prices and slower growth in pay forced people to save less.

"The US personal income and spending data for August are worse than the headline figures suggest and indicate that subdued jobs growth is hitting incomes," said Paul Dales, senior U.S. The increase "was largely due to extra spending caused by the surge in gasoline prices."

High unemployment and weak wage growth have kept Americans from spending more freely, which has held back growth. Consumer spending drives nearly 70 percent of economic activity.

The economy grew at an annual rate of 1.3 percent in the April-June quarter, the government reported Thursday. Most economists say growth rate will likely hover around 2 percent in the July-September quarter, a rate that is far too weak to lower the unemployment rate.

"American household spending and income remain weak, indicating continued subpar growth," said Sal Gautieri, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets.

The combination of weak income growth and a big jump in spending meant that households saved less. The saving rate dropped to 3.7 percent of after-tax income in August, down from 4.1 percent in July.

A price gauge tied to consumer spending jumped 0.4 percent, reflecting the rise in energy prices. It was the biggest one-month jump since March 2011. Excluding food and energy, prices barely changed. Over the past year, prices excluding food and energy rose only 1.6 percent, well below the Federal Reserve's 2 percent inflation target.

Earlier this month, the government released a mixed report on retail spending that showed that consumers are feeling pinched by higher gas prices.

Consumers spent 0.9 percent more at retail businesses in August from July. But excluding the impact of gas prices and a sizeable increase in auto sales, retail sales rose just 0.1 percent. The retail sales report showed Americans cut back on clothing, electronics and at general merchandise outlets.

There have been some positive signs that spending could pick up in September, most notably a pair of positive consumer confidence surveys released this week.

The University of Michigan's index released Friday showed consumer sentiment rose this month to its second-highest level in nearly five years. A separate survey from the Conference Board said consumer confidence jumped in September to its highest level since February.

Stock prices are higher. Steady gains in home prices, along with record-low mortgage rates, have helped fuel a modest recovery in the housing market.

And a report Thursday offered some hope that the job market will strengthen. Weekly applications for unemployment benefits plunged 26,000 to a seasonally adjusted 359,000. That's the lowest level in two months.

Still, most economists expect only modest hiring gains when the government releases the September employment report next week. The forecast is that employers added roughly 100,000 jobs, about the same as in August.

Sabathia strikes out 10 as Yankees top Twins

By DAVE CAMPBELL

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:38 p.m. ET Sept. 26, 2012

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - This hasn't been the smoothest of seasons for C.C. Sabathia. He's still coming through when it counts for the New York Yankees.

Sabathia struck out 10 batters over eight innings for New York to help the Yankees stretch their AL East lead to two games over Baltimore by beating the Minnesota Twins 8-2 on Wednesday.

The Orioles hosted Toronto later Wednesday. The Yankees visit the Blue Jays for four games starting Thursday. Baltimore, after an off day, plays Boston at home this weekend. Sabathia will pitch again next week when the Yankees host the Red Sox.

"This is what he can do. He can string a bunch of good ones together. And if there's a time, now's the time," manager Joe Girardi said.

Sabathia (14-6) threw 89 of his 118 pitches for strikes, including three straight to Twins All-Star Joe Mauer for the second of his three strikeouts in the fourth inning. Mauer, who began the day three points in the batting race behind Detroit's Triple Crown chaser Miguel Cabrera with a .326 average, went 0 for 4.

"That's the best I've seen him, and I've been watching him for a long time," Mauer said. "When I was up there he was both sides of the plate: fastball, slider, sinker. He threw me everything, and everything was working."

Sabathia spent two stints on the disabled list this summer, for a strained left groin and an inflamed left elbow. This was his first win in six starts, and he credited impeccable command of his fastball to set up his other pitches.

"We're in a race. We know it's going to be tough. So you want to go out and do well every time out," Sabathia said, adding: "Hopefully I can go out and pitch well again the next time. I'll take what I can out of this one and be ready to go five days from now."

Robinson Cano hit a two-run double and Curtis Granderson added a two-run triple during a six-run third inning against Brian Duensing (4-11), and Sabathia took care of the rest. The burly lefty gave up six hits, two runs and one walk.

Sabathia improved to 10-0 with a 1.96 ERA in his last 11 appearances against the Twins, including the 2009 and 2010 postseason. He threw eight scoreless innings in his last start against Oakland, striking out 11, but didn't get the victory because the Yankees won in the 10th. Matt Carson and Pedro Florimon had RBI singles, but that was about the only solid contact Sabathia allowed.

Chris Dickerson also hit a two-run homer for the Yankees, who lost to the Twins on Tuesday night and played without third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who has a bruised left foot. Derek Jeter's 19-game hitting streak ended with an 0-for-4 afternoon, but he walked and scored in the third.

The Yankees enjoyed a tension-free afternoon while winning for the 12th time in their last 16 games. Even the bad plays turned out all right.

Granderson was picked off first base in the second inning, but he scored on a wild pitch in the third.

Eric Chavez, thinking there were two outs instead of one in the fifth inning, casually fielded a grounder at third and stepped on the base for the force as he jogged toward the dugout before stopping and realizing his mistake. Sabathia shouted assurance to Chavez, whose embarrassed "oops" expression was frozen on the jumbo video screen above left-center field to the crowd's amusement.

"I'm glad they were entertained," Chavez said, smiling.

But after a passed ball by Chris Stewart put runners at second and third and threatened to exploit Chavez's blunder, Sabathia calmly retired Denard Span on a groundout to first to keep the lead at 6-1. If Chavez had tried to turn the double play, he might've only got one out anyway, Girardi said, which would've led to a run on the passed ball.

"Sometimes things work out right," Girardi said.

After a leadoff double by Raul Ibanez in the sixth, Dickerson circled the bases with his drive off Anthony Swarzak, who was the second long reliever called on by the Twins.

Starter Samuel Deduno struck out two without a hit or a run despite two walks. After the second one, though, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire and assistant athletic trainer Dave Pruemer came to the mound for a long talk with the right-hander with two outs in the second inning. The diagnosis was irritation in his left eye, and Deduno was removed for Duensing.

He put seven straight runners on, including two walks, before finishing the inning. Duensing, who started a postseason game against the Yankees in 2009 and 2010, let his ERA rise from 4.68 to 5.15.

"I feel like we're playing our best ball now, and this is the perfect time to be doing that," said Nick Swisher, who had an RBI single.

NOTES: RH Ivan Nova (12-7, 4.94 ERA) pitches for the Yankees on Thursday against RH Brandon Morrow (8-7, 3.28 ERA) of the Blue Jays. The Twins are off on Thursday before hosting Detroit this weekend. They'll send LH Scott Diamond (12-8, 3.64 ERA) to the mound on Friday, opposite RH Max Scherzer (16-7, 3.82 ERA) of the Tigers. ... The Yankees have homered in each of their last 12 games against the Twins, totaling 25 in that span. ... The Yankees notched their 90th win for the 15th time in the last 17 seasons. ... Swisher made a nifty scoop and throw to get Ben Revere out on a slow roller in the first inning. He's been playing 1B with Mark Teixeira rehabilitating his strained right calf. "I'm just trying to keep it warm until my boy Tex gets back," Swisher said. Girardi left open the possibility of Teixeira returning to the team this weekend in Toronto.

The Daring Vision to Renew Downtown Detroit

Here it is, 2025, and Dan Gilbert still feels a pinch of incredulity when he looks out his office window at the bustling streets of downtown Detroit. Less than 20 years ago, this part of the city was a ghost town. Now office workers fill the sidewalks during the day, and at night the walks are alive with people going to restaurants and bars, theaters and nightclubs, art galleries and sporting events. Many of these people not only work but also live downtown. That's all because Gilbert, founder and chairman of Quicken Loans and owner of several other businesses, teamed up with a few ambitious souls and decided to take a chance.

It was 2010. Gilbert, the son of a Detroit bar owner, had spent the previous 25 years building Quicken Loans into the nation's largest on-line mortgage lender. The company, based in the Detroit suburbs, had more than 4000 employees. Gilbert's decision to move his business to downtown Detroit bucked the historical trend of city-based firms relocating to suburban office parks.

Gilbert says he made the move not just out of altruism, but because it made business sense. "They were having a skyscraper sale in Detroit," he says. He snagged a bushel of buildings, some of them historic landmarks, at rock-bottom prices, plus a parking lot and four garages.

Soon Gilbert's office and retail space began filling up with a variety of businesses, notably tech startups, which were key to his strategy to turn Detroit into the Silicon Valley of the Midwest. "Wealth is created by brains today," he says. "It's not muscle anymore."

His strategy is so successful that downtown living spaces fill up, and people begin spilling into adjacent neighborhoods. "People are moving here because it's where the action is," Gilbert says. "The big sell is that they're making a change in this town."

Downtown Detroit's vitality was presaged by the construction of the Compuware Building in 2003. Peter Karmanos Jr., the co-founder of Compuware, promptly moved 4000 employees from the suburbs to the new 15-story tower. This influx of talent planted Detroit's flag as a future high-tech center.

Companies such as GalaxE.Solutions, a healthcare-industry software developer, joined the downtown Detroit club in 2011, when CEO Tim Bryan placed his 2000 employees in a building that had been acquired by Gilbert and his partners. Bryan tips his hat to the people and businesses who led the way. "Peter Karmanos, Mike Ilitch, Dan Gilbert, GM, the Fords?they're the reason I chose to locate here. They made the investment. I came here as an outsider because of those insiders."

Meet the Castellucci Family - Keeping it in the Family - Eater Atlanta

Keeping it in the Family is a new series in which Eater interviews families who work together in the restaurants industry.

Steph%2C-Fred%2C-Nancy%2C-Fred.jpg
Stephanie, Federico II, Nancy, and Federico III Castellucci.

The Castellucci Hospitality Group (Sugo, The Iberian Pig and Double Zero Napoletana) was founded in 2003 in Atlanta, but the Castellucci family's history in the hospitality industry dates back to 1917 when Federico II Castellucci's great grandfather opened an Italian restaurant in Rhode Island. It seems that the restaurant business is in their blood.

Eater checked in with the Castellucci family to find out what it's like to run a true family business, how they separate business from pleasure, and what's next for the Castellucci Hospitality Group.

Federico II was on his way to becoming an attorney when his father's restaurant burned down. He stepped in, rebuilt the business and never turned back. The family moved to Georgia, opened Sugo in John's Creek and then in Duluth, where Nancy is now general manager. But when Federico III returned from Cornell University, where he was preparing to become an investment banker, and saw Sugo Duluth failing, he, too, abandoned his plans in order to save his family restaurant. Once Sugo was back in order, he partnered with college friend Chad Crete to open The Iberian Pig. His sister Stephanie, also home from Cornell, stepped in, taking over the management of Sugo John's Creek, and freeing up Federico to open the family's newest restaurant, Double Zero Napoletana, which Stephanie now manages.

What's it like running a "family business"? How do you think that changes both the way you operate and the resulting quality of your restaurants?
Federico III: The biggest thing is that you have people that you can ultimately trust to look after the businesses on a night by night basis. If I'm at one restaurant and I know that everyone else is spread out at the others, I feel comfortable that things are being taken care of.

Do you talk about work at family functions? If not, how do you keep it separate?
Stephanie: We ALWAYS talk about work at family functions. The conversations get lively, especially over a few bottles of wines, but it is always fun. This is what we love to do, so we talk about it all the time. We try to stay away from the really sticky subjects, and always mix in non-restaurant talk as well.

How do you handle disagreements about restaurant operations or decisions? Who gets the final say?
Federico III: I get the final say. We rarely have disagreements about operations since the goal is always to take care of the guest at all costs. When it comes to strategic decisions, we debate and then I ultimately make the call and everyone gets behind that.

Federico II, how do you feel about your decision to give up your dream of becoming a lawyer and reopen your father's restaurant after it burned in a fire? Do you ever think about "what if"?
Federico II: No, I don't think about it. I did what I did initially /ong>/out of necessity. My parents could not wait for me to become successful as a lawyer. We needed to make money quickly. I later found out that the restaurant business satisfied two basic needs for me: creative independence and the ability to know immediately how I stood with the guest?as opposed to waiting sometimes years in the legal profession to know the ultimate outcome of your efforts. I also feel that I am /ng>continuing in my ancestor's footsteps and that the hardships they faced and overcame always gave me the inspiration I needed at the worst moments of my life, or as Ernest Hemingway said, "A man can be destroyed but not defeated."

Nancy, how did you feel getting sucked into the family business? Did you have any prior restaurant experience? How has it changed the course of your life?
Nancy: I worked in my husband's first restaurant in Rhode Island as a part-time bartender when I was 19. After a 7-year engagement, we were married. I think he wanted me to understand that I was also marrying the restaurants. I had a degree in physical therapy and I practiced on and off, but my passion for the people in this business has always led me back. It has been tough at times, but there is no greater satisfaction than seeing my children succeed. We have realized our greatest success as parents.

Federico III and Stephanie, how did your father's path influence your career? If he had become a lawyer, do you think you'd still be in the hospitality business? Why or why not?
Federico III: To be honest, I didn't have any intention of following him. I went to Cornell and had all this restaurant background, but I thought I wanted to do finance and become an investment banker on Wall Street. As I started school, I realized all the hospitality kids were having way more fun with food, wine, and restaurants. It was a wake-up call, and instead of trying to run away from the business, I re-discovered how passionate I was for it. When I graduated, our businesses were on the verge of failure back in 2007. The choice was either abandon my family and get a job in New York or try to save the family business. It wasn't even close. It obviously worked out for the better.

Stephanie: I always watched him cooking growing up and how much passion and enthusiasm he has for what he does. I wanted to choose a path where I could wake up everyday and be truly excited to go to work and make a difference. After pretty much growing up in our restaurants, I realized that the hospitality industry really was my passion and that getting excited about food and wine was easy and natural for me. I really have no idea if he had chosen a different path whether I would be in the industry or not. I certainly would not have the same exposure and experience at a young age to the restaurant business. You can never look back and wonder what if. You can't live your life like that. I'm just happy to have a job I love and be able to be surrounded by my family everyday. Not everyone can say that.

How has your family's diverse background influenced your cooking and your restaurants? How often do each of you return to Greece and Italy?
Federico III: There is no doubt that our upbringing has influenced our restaurants; however, not in the way you think. I grew up in a restaurant from the time I was 5. I got my first job outside of the family when I was 11. I cooked in professional kitchens til I was 21. My cooking is a result of my experience in the restaurant business. Now I am lucky to have someone like Chad Crete (chef/partner) who thinks very much on the same level about food, flavors and creativity. We have similar food backgrounds, and work very well together when it comes to concept creation. I am constantly thinking about the big ideas with my head in the sky. He is the one to interpret those ideas and /ng>make food magic out of it. When it clicks, it really clicks.

We don't travel as much to Europe as we would like, but one of us makes it almost every year. Unfortunately, there is really no such thing as a family vacation. One or two leave and the rest watch after the restaurants.

Federico III, do you have children? If so, do you think they'll continue in your footsteps? Would you want them to?
Federico III: I do not have any children yet, but I can tell you that I won't force them to go into the restaurant business. They can do whatever they become passionate about. The biggest thing that I worry about is them being spoiled. Stephanie and I grew up in an entrepreneurial family where times could be very tough. We had to work hard and struggle to keep the family business alive at times. There were no summers in the Hamptons or family trips to exotic locations. We all worked, all the time. I hope that I can instill that work ethic in my kids when there isn't that same struggle.

How do you decide when it's time to open a new restaurant or close an existing one? There must be some sentimental value there. How do you separate those nostalgic feelings from the (financial) business of it?
Federico III: This is always a tricky one. If the restaurant isn't performing, you have to make a decision. /You can't be emotional about it. I don't understand how people keep pouring money into restaurants that don't work. We don't open restaurants to just stay in business. We open them to thrive. If a restaurant is just chugging along and not growing, we either re-concept or close, although with the exception of the misguided franchise program, we have never closed any restaurants. We either sell or re-concept. In the case of the Roasted Garlic, we sold. With Sugo, the franchisees decided to take themselves out of the game when they couldn't properly operate the restaurants. It was a great learning experience NOT to be repeated.

Rumor has it you have a new restaurant in the works. Care to share details?
Federico III: There is in fact a new restaurant in the works. We have not yet found the precise home for the restaurant yet, but hopefully something will break soon. We have been very tight lipped about the concept since our last idea for a new concept was very coincidentally announced to be opening in Atlanta relatively soon. Not going to mention any names, but there isn't a whole lot of originality out there. There are some guys like Kevin [Rathbun] and Bob [Amick], but there just isn't a lot. That said, our ideas are constantly being refined and developed for the moment when we find that right space with the right narrative that speaks to the concept. If you don't do something unique you run the risk of losing your identity.

Mortgages ? Flood insurance

Where a plaintiff brought suit claiming that the defendant mortgage lender?s demand that he increase his flood coverage by $46,000 breached both the terms of his mortgage contract and the contract's implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, the mortgage is reasonably susceptible to an understanding that supports the plaintiff's breach of contract and implied covenant claims under New Jersey law.

Jello wrestling highlights Rock & Tattoo Expo in Lewiston ? Living ...

LEWISTON, Maine ? The Jello-wrestling competition may have been a bit light on contestants, but it was definitely slimy on fun at this year?s Rock & Tattoo Expo.

In the end, there were no winners. There were, however, three friends cheered on by a crowd and covered from head to toe in orange Jello. Contestants shoved the slimy concoction at one another all the while trying to keep their balance in a plastic, blow-up baby pool.

?I guess we?ll just have to see what happens,? said Tina Handley, of Mexico, just minutes before getting in the ring with her friend Jennie Nisbet, of Rumford. ?The Jello?s pretty slippery, so I don?t expect to be standing much.?

The good-natured ? albeit gooey ? fun was all part of the three-day event held at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee featuring more than 40 tattoo artists from all across New England and as far away as California and Florida. Now in its third year, organizer Kris Howes ? tattoo artist and owner of INK! in Rumford ? said the event has nearly doubled each year.

In addition to tattoos and body piercings, the expo also featured a full slate of bands all day Saturday, as well as a freak show and art auction benefiting the family of Ken DeMars, of Carthage, who died suddenly at his home in July. Howes said this year?s event attracted about 1,000 people ? from the curious who came for their first tattoo or body piercing ? to those who wanted to add to their skin canvases.

?I think it?s become more accepted in the last five years,? said Howes? girlfriend, Michelle DuFault. ?It?s become more mainstreamed over the last few years.?

Nisbet said the Jello wrestling was a joke of DeMars who kept trying to talk organizers into having the event as part of the Expo. She said despite the low number of people who entered the event, the wrestling was fun and that was what the Tattoo Expo was all about.

April Pelletier, tattoo artist and co-owner of Artistic Creations in Auburn, said meeting tattoo artists from all over was one of the best parts of the event. This was her tattoo shop?s first time participating in the expo.

?Every artist here was phenomenal. The bands were amazing. And the people were just fantastic,? Pelletier said.

According to Pelletier, the event drew several new customers to the shop she owns with her husband and fellow tattoo artist, Eric, as well as many repeat customers to their business. Three new customers included sisters Joann Breen, of Skowhegan, and Michele and Beth Aldrich, both of Norridgewock, who came to the the Expo to all get the same tattoo.

Breen said all three got the word ?Sisters? permanently inked on their body with the infinity sign below it. While her sisters opted to have their tattoos placed on their feet, Breen got her tattoo on her wrist.

?We?re bonding. This is sister bonding,? said Breen with a laugh. ?I think if you get a tattoo, you should be proud of it. You shouldn?t get it just because.?

New Jersey legislator seeks ban on NFL replacement refs

(Reuters) - A New Jersey legislative leader wants to ban NFL replacement referees from his state after a disputed call cost the Green Bay Packers their Monday night game.

New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney, an admitted Packers fan, said on Tuesday he will introduce a bill to ban replacement officials from calling any professional sports event in New Jersey, home to two NFL teams, the Giants and Jets.

Monday's disputed call was the latest controversy involving officials brought in to replace regular NFL referees who have been locked out of this season's games due to a labor dispute with the NFL.

In a written statement on Tuesday, Sweeney, a Democrat cited the risk to player safety. He later said he equated the use of replacement referees with consumer fraud.

"Enough is enough," Sweeney said in a telephone interview. "To me, it's like fraud... It is not the product that people are paying for. Maybe people should start to demand refunds on their tickets."

An NFL fan, Sweeney follows the Green Bay Packers, who on Monday lost 12-14 to the Seattle Seahawks in what has become one of the biggest officiating controversies of the season. The Seahawks won the game at the last second on a call when two officials appeared to disagree.

"Clueless in Seattle," is how ESPN billed the controversy on its web site on Tuesday.

Sweeney said in a written statement that his foremost concern was keeping players safe by shutting out "inexperienced referees who cannot control a game".

He said, "We wouldn't allow a factory or construction site to operate without fully trained supervisors on hand to ensure the safety of employees. Why should we do anything differently when the job site is a playing field?"

There was no immediate comment from the office of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

Willie Banks Returns to Record Books: Oldest American to High ...

SAN DIEGO, CA ? Willie Banks of Carlsbad is 56 now. But?the former Oceanside High School star who went on to track and field fame at UCLA and set a world record in the triple jump?still enjoys the sport.

Saturday at Mesa College, competing long after others in his event, he became the oldest American to clear 6 feet in the high jump.

His first-try clearance at the San Diego Senior Games beat the current age-group U.S. best of?5-10 3/4 by Olympian Jim Barrineau in August?which in turn had topped the event?s oldest record, 5-10 by Herm Wyatt in 1987.

How did he do it? Extra training? Special coaching?

Banks said no: ?I?ve been losing weight for this.? ?Since January, he said, he?s gone from 203 pounds?to 183.?

Using a three-step approach. Banks cleared his first height?5-6?then followed with successful tries at 5-8 and 5-10, measured metrically at 1.68, 1.73 and 1.78 meters. He used the straddle technique, clearing face to the bar, instead of the almost universally used Fosbury flop, with back to the bar.

After jumping 6 feet, he had the bar raised another 5 centimeters to 1.88 meters, or 6-2. He barely missed on his second try. That would have topped the listed world age-group record for men 55-59 of 6-0 1/2 by Thomas Zacharias of Germany.

Banks, who competed in the 1984 and 1988 Olympics, was inducted into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame in 1999. His world record in the triple jump of 58-11 1/2 lasted 10 years.

Portland-Based Prestobox Automates Brand Identity For Small - Techli

prestobox

When it comes to branding, small business owners often have no clue where to start. But where should they turn for help? Just take a look at sites like Your Logo Makes Me Barf, and you?ll discover an underground community of designers who would rather make fun of the branding missteps of small business owners rather than help them strengthen their identity.

Enter Prestobox, a company that automates brand identity. Prestobox?s new Brand Genie product helps small business owners not only generate a brand identity based on a set of questions about the company, it also gives small business owners the option to purchase the identity across multiple platforms, including business cards and website templates. Brand Genie was tested on over 25 small companies, with 100 percent of the participants calling the process ?easy and fun?. The process is free, and Prestobox offers a number of branding suggestions that include recommended colors, fonts and images.

Prestobox was founded by CEO Elicia Putnam, who partnered with COO/CFO Sara Conte, an experienced angel investor and consultant. Michael Verdine is in charge of the creative side of the team. He is known for his work with Nike.

Putnam came up with the idea for PrestoBox when she was working at her own agency 14 Hands. She found that branding was hard to scale, and many small business owners just couldn?t afford the service. When small businesses try to brand themselves, they often don?t understand how colors, messaging, and images all tell the story of their business.

?We are thrilled to launch PrestoBox and create an affordable, easy and fun software service to solve the challenge of small business branding,? believes Putnam. ?We believe in brands and we believe that every company of every size should have one.?

The market for automated branding services is huge, and the onboarding process via the Brand Genie quiz is actually as easy as Prestobox claims. There is no snobby agency jargon on the Prestobox site. Instead, small business owners will find a straightforward solution to their simple problem.
