(AP) ? It could hardly have been a riskier mission: infiltrate Auschwitz to chronicle Nazi atrocities. Witold Pilecki survived nearly three years as an inmate in the death camp, managing to smuggle out word of executions before making a daring escape. But the Polish resistance hero was crushed by the post-war communist regime ? tried on trumped-up charges and executed.

Six decades on, Poland hopes Pilecki's remains will be identified among the entangled skeletons and shattered skulls of resistance fighters being excavated from a mass grave on the edge of Warsaw's Powazki Military Cemetery. The exhumations are part of a movement in the resurgent, democratic nation to officially recognize its war-time heroes and 20th century tragedies.

"He was unique in the world," said Zofia Pilecka-Optulowicz, paying tribute to her father's 1940 decision to walk straight into a Nazi street roundup with the aim of getting inside the extermination camp. "I would like to have a place where I can light a candle for him."

More than 100 skeletons, mostly of men, have been dug up this summer. On one recent day, forensic workers and archaeologists wearing blue plastic gloves and masks were carefully scraping away at the soil and piecing together bones as if working on a jigsaw puzzle. The front of one skull had been blown away by bullets; another had apparently been bludgeoned; a skeleton showed evidence of multiple gunshot wounds.

Near the pit where the bodies were dumped under cover of night stand the well-tended tombstones of the very judges and prosecutors who sent these World War II heroes to their deaths under orders from Moscow, which was fearful that the Polish patriots might use their seasoned underground skills to turn the nation against its new pro-Soviet rulers.

"The perpetrators have not been punished and the bodies of the victims have not been found," said Krzysztof Szwagrzyk, a historian in charge of the dig. "Those times will be coming back to us until we find the bodies and bury them with due honors.

"We are doing them justice."

Pilecki's son Andrzej and dozens of other relatives of victims have been swabbed in the hope their DNA will be a match for the skeletons. Initial work is being carried out to determine age, sex, height and injuries of the victims. It will take several months to determine if Pilecki, who was killed by a bullet to the back of his head, is among them. Thousands of resistance fighters were killed across Poland; the remains of up to 400 are believed to have been dumped in the Powazki mass grave.

Pilecki was 38 when Germany invaded Poland on Sept. 1, 1939, triggering the start of World War II. He helped organize a resistance campaign during which many fellow fighters were caught and sent to Auschwitz, which in the early war years served more as a camp for Polish resistance fighters than Jews. That inspired him to hatch an audacious plan: He told other resistance commanders that he wanted to become an Auschwitz inmate to check on rumors of atrocities.

Carrying documents bearing the alias Tomasz Serafinski, the Catholic cavalry officer walked into the German SS street roundup in Warsaw in September 1940, and was put on a train transport to Auschwitz, where he was given prisoner number 4859.

He was "exceptionally courageous," said Jacek Pawlowicz, a historian with Warsaw's Institute of National Remembrance.

Pilecki is the only person known to have volunteered for Auschwitz. His terse dispatches to the outside world were slips of thin paper stitched inside clothes of inmates leaving the camp or left in nearby fields for others to collect. They included only code names for inmates who were beaten to death, executed by gunfire or gassed. As sketchy as they were, they were the first eyewitness account of the Nazi death machine at Auschwitz.

Pilecki survived hard labor, beatings, cold and typhoid fever thanks to support from a clandestine resistance network that he managed to organize inside the camp. Some of its members had access to food, others to clothes or medicines.

He plotted a revolt that was to release inmates with the help of an outside attack by resistance fighters; it was never attempted because considered too risky, Pawlowicz said.

Pilecki escaped in April 1943 when he realized that the SS might uncover his work. With two other men he ran from a night shift at a bakery that was outside the death camp's barbed wire fence.

After his escape, Pilecki wrote three detailed reports on the extermination camp.

One describes how his transport was met by yelling SS men and attacking dogs: "They told one of us to run to a post away from the road, and immediately sent a machine gun round after him. Killed him. Ten random colleagues were taken out of the group and shot, as they were walking, as 'collective responsibility' for the 'escape' that the SS-men arranged themselves."

Pilecki's heroics were for the most part in vain. Even though his accounts of gas chambers made it all the way to Poland's government-in-exile in London and to other Western capitals, few believed what they were reading.

After escaping, Pilecki rejoined Poland's Home Army resistance force and fought in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, the city's ill-fated revolt against the Nazis. In 1947, he was arrested by the secret security of the communist regime, imposed on Poland after the war, and falsely accused of planning to assassinate dignitaries.

The Soviet plan after World War II was to subdue the Poles by crushing resistance and erasing any sense of Polish identity or history. Today, more than two decades into Poland's democracy, however, enough documentation and funds have been gathered to restore the banned past and try to find and identify the heroes' bodies.

In addition to Pilecki, the search is on for the remains of other wartime resistance heroes, including Brig. Gen. August Emil Fieldorf, a top clandestine Home Army commander who once served as emissary to Poland of the country's government-in-exile. He was accused of ordering killings of Soviet soldiers ? charges that Poland's communist authorities later admitted were fabricated ? and hanged in 1953.

Szwagrzyk is not sure if Pilecki will be found at Powazki cemetery because it is not the only such clandestine site in Warsaw or the rest of Poland.

But his place in history is gradually being restored. A street in Warsaw is now named after him, as are some schools across the country.

He found communist prison harder to endure than Auschwitz. A fellow inmate described seeing him in prison slumped, unable to raise his head because his collar bones had been broken. At his show trial, he was hiding his hands because his fingernails had been ripped out during torture.

At one court session, he told his wife Maria that the secret security torture had sapped his will to go on.

"I can live no longer," he said.

woolrich Real Estate Investing - Medical Travel Club

We are now presented a variety of ways for making money in real estate investing in TV infomercials, books and seminars. Which is best? Who can say? Real estate investing is learned through trial and error. Real estate investing skills and techniques are acquired by practice. I don?t think anyone can dogmatically recommend a technique best for another person. Every real estate investor has unique needs and is in a unique situation. Objectives of real estate investing differs.

To learn how to profit in real estate investing, even without cash or credit, read his report at Subscription is free to his Fix-up Ezine. He and other contributing authors provide free articles and resources on real estate investing at his online ?Academy of Advanced Real Estate Investing Techniques? at

But it was Mark Haroldsen who carried the real estate investing book/seminar thrust to the next level. Haroldsen wrote, ?How to Wake Up the Financial Genius Inside You.? If you were tuned in to real estate investing at that time, you remember the newspaper and magazine advertising showing a picture of suave and bald-headed Mark leaning against the front hood of his Mercedes. The picture appeared everywhere in full page ads of major publications. And as Mark began selling his books, he began holding real estate investing seminars. I have had lunch with Mark and Al Lowry as they swapped stories of the advertising blitzes that vaulted them into national prominence for their real estate investing prowess. Mark later wrote ?The Courage To Be Rich? and ?Tax Free.?

In the 1960s, William Nickerson wrote, ?How I Turned $1000 into Three Million in Real Estate? and ?How to Make a Fortune Today Starting from Scratch.? It was one of the first real estate investing books to get national attention. A little later, Al Lowry authored ?How You Can Become Financially Independent by Investing in Real Estate.? Al Lowry might be called ?the father of the modern-day real estate seminars,? because he was the first to hold seminars as a result of his book sales.

Phil Speer, louboutin, Ph.D., started his real estate investing career 25 years ago. Without the availability of credit and using only a $10 bill, he purchased $1 million in properties in his first year, and had accumulated $10 million in properties by his fourth year. . He was featured in a Wall St.Journal editorial as most successful investor in the Nothing Down Real Estate Movement, and was honored with a Caribbean cruise as top investor of the year. In his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, he has been a businessman and Human Resources Consultant for 30 years. He is an author, speaker and seminar director.

Real estate investing has become popularized today because of real estate investing TV infomercials and traveling seminar circuits. But real estate investing has not always been so popular.

However, louboutin, if you are limited with real estate investing educational dollars and need to generate quick return on investment, I think fixing up cheap houses is an ideal beginning point. Real estate investing in makeover properties generates quick, moncler, profitable dollars with low risk.

But it was Robert Allen who capitalized on the previous groundwork by Lowry and Haroldsen. Robert Allen was reportedly paid $1 million advance royalties for his best-selling book, ?Nothing Down,? a compilation of 50 techniques for buying property with no money. Robert had learned these techniques from several years experience with a commercial real estate firm. He later wrote ?Creating Wealth? and ?Getting Started in Real Estate Investing.? The Robert Allen Real Estate Investing Seminars became a phenomenal marketing bonanza. Conventions were held in the major cities across the country, like Orlando, peuterey outlet, LA,www.doudounemonclerruboutique.com, Dallas, Chicago and Atlanta. The authors of various real estate investing techniques spoke at these seminars, louboutin pas cher, but their spiel focused on selling packages of real estate investing materials that they offered for sale. Millions of dollars of real estate investing materials were sold at these 3 day conventions. The convention frenzy ushered in what has since become known as ?The Nothing Down Real Estate Movement? of the early to mid-1980s.

I keep all of these books in my personal library, moncler, and you can probably still find them in your public library and book stores. There?s a lot of great information in these books that can make you very knowledgeable, even though some of the ideas are out-dated.

Puzo family wants Paramount out of "The Godfather"

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The family of "The Godfather" author Mario Puzo wants a federal judge to stop Paramount Pictures Corp from making movies based on sequels to the best-selling, Oscar-winning story of the Mafia.

A lawyer for Puzo's heirs, Bertram Fields, said in Manhattan federal court on Thursday that Viacom Inc's Paramount breached a decades-old contract with Puzo by trying to stop publication last May of a new book, "The Family Corleone."

In February, Paramount sued Anthony Puzo, Mario's son and executor, accusing the heirs of approving sequels to the 1969 best-seller without the studio's permission and in violation of earlier agreements. Paramount, the studio behind the Oscar-winning movie version of Puzo's story of a New York Mafia family, said the new book infringed its copyright.

The Puzo family fired back with a counterclaim a month later that Paramount had been given ample notice and asked for $10 million in damages.

U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan did not make a ruling on the counterclaim following oral arguments on Thursday. She did not indicate when she would issue a decision.

Fields said after the hearing that since it was Paramount that had sued the Puzo estate, the family was disinclined to deal with the studio again.

He told reporters that if the Puzo estate won the case, he expected various studios to take an interest in the rights to future "Godfather" movies.

"I'm sure they would," Fields said.

A spokesman for Paramount Pictures said in a statement that the studio had "tremendous respect and admiration for Mario Puzo" and "as we have said before, we have an obligation to and will protect our copyright and trademark interests."

The family said in court papers that Paramount did not automatically have film rights to the books that followed the original.

Paramount's lawyer, Richard Kendall, argued that the Puzos' claim to rescind the original 1969 agreement between Mario Puzo and Paramount could not be granted under the law. In 1969, Paramount bought from Puzo all rights and copyright interests in "The Godfather."

"I believe the court is in a position to say that based on this claim, and the passage of 40 years ... the omelet cannot be unscrambled at this point," Kendall said.

Mario Puzo died in 1999. The two sequels to the Godfather saga published since his death were written by Mark Winegardner. The third novel published in May was written by Ed Falco.

The case is Paramount Pictures Corporation v Puzo in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 12-01268

Hubby and I had a little bit of alone time Saturday night and ran off to a local Sushi joint, but of course we finally did what most parents do on a night out- went to Walmart. We are looking around and pricing a new TV for our bedroom since the color seems to be going out on our current one- which is only a couple years old. We noticed that there seem to be some HUGE Rollbacks going on in the electronics department at Walmart. We saw a 36 inch 3D, HDTV Smart TV on sale for $350ish. If we didn?t have a self imposed spending limit for the moment- we would have grabbed it up. I saw the same deal in 2 other Walmart stores locally. Yes, I make my rounds- kinda like the Dollar Tree, and Goodwills too. You have to check in the different stores because you never know what you will find different.

A Couple deals I found at Dollar Tree include jello mold cups. Yes, think of the containers you buy ready made jello in at the store. Now, you can make up your jello and pour it into these mold cups that have removeable lids and bottoms, and save some money. These come in a 4-pack. I also grabbed some Natures Own Bread ? HFCS free. And remember everything at Dollar Tree is just $1!

I plan to help bring you great products and deals to help save you $$ throughout the year. I will be compiling lists and deals that I find around the web and blog world that helps me. I love helping others save money. Just try not to hoard all the deals for yourself.

You can also find Printable coupons on my personal website : Begin To Craft. And yes, printing the coupons from my site does help support my own shopping habits to bring great deals to you! :-)

Where are you favorite deal spots locally?
Have you found any sweet deals lately you can share with us?

Guide to Exceptional Cleveland Home Remodeling | Jesica

The process of changing the way your house looks should never be taken lightly. This is regardless of whether you have done Cleveland home remodeling before or not. Simple mistakes can tarnish the ambiance and cost you a great sum of money.

The process of changing the way your house looks should never be taken lightly. This is regardless of whether you have done Cleveland home remodeling before or not. Simple mistakes can tarnish the ambiance and cost you a great sum of money. Today, if you are searching for better results in home remodeling, the following steps will come in handy.

The number one thing you should do is embark on research. The key reason why people are exploited or end with second best results when it comes to Cleveland home improvements is because of their reluctance to learn more on remodeling. There are many trends in the market. The downside is that not all of them will be applicable to you. Performing due diligence beforehand eludes chances of getting shoddy work done in Cleveland home remodeling. Consider the nature of service offered by different contractors prior to confining to the most promising Cleveland general contractor.

Another important thing to do is document everything. This will save you from the menace of malpractices. After selecting the right contractor to work with, make sure you read and understand his policy and keep a copy to yourself. Documenting everything will save you from undesired frustrations in future. Additionally, documenting the photos of what you expect from your Cleveland home improvements will help the contractor work towards meeting your goals.

Raising concerns as soon as the need arises is highly recommended. To cover for their incompetence, some contractors tend to bend the desired project in their favor. If you suspect that the project is not going as planned, it is paramount that you raise concerns. This will keep the Cleveland general contractor from veering off course. To avoid the undesired changes, it is paramount that you take time to discuss your project needs with the contractor prior to giving the go ahead.

If the Cleveland home improvements you selected seem insufficient, it is a great idea to escalate if necessary. It makes no sense to get second best results in remodeling simply because you do not want to add an extra dime to get the best services. The house is your greatest investment and the best you can do is making it as elegant as possible. If an extra coin to the project will make your Cleveland home remodeling exceptional, do it.

The difference between shoddy work and an exceptional home improvement lies in the competence of the contractor. This is why you need to take extra time when hiring a Cleveland general contractor to work with. To achieve the best results, you need to conduct a background check to ascertain the reputation of the contractor. Additionally, you must look at what past clients have to say about your selected service provider. Lastly, review the terns of service keenly.

Finally, if you are searching for the best results in Cleveland family room additions, it is paramount that you give the contractor adequate time to complete the project. Hasty decisions or accelerated timetables often results in detestable outcomes.

Chicago Casino, Illinois Gambling Expansion Rejected By Gov. Quinn

CHICAGO -- Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday rejected a bill to expand gambling in Illinois, including a new land-based casino in Chicago, saying the proposal lacked sufficient regulatory oversight.

With two of his predecessors in prison, the Chicago Democrat had made it clear he must preserve his political integrity in the plan, which also proposed establishing four new riverboat casinos and allowing slot machines at racetracks.

The most glaring omission from the bill "is the absence of strict ethical standards and comprehensive regulatory oversight. Illinois should never settle for a gaming bill that includes loopholes for mobsters," Quinn said in a statement.

Supporters of the bill estimated the expansion could have brought in up to $1 billion a year, boost tourism and create 100,000 jobs for the state. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel supported the establishment of a city casino.

But opponents said more casinos could saturate some markets and raised concerns about the social cost.

The proposal would have established a city-owned Chicago casino with spots for 4,000 people to gamble at once. It also would have added riverboat casinos in Danville, Park City, Rockford and an undecided location in Chicago's south suburbs. Each riverboat casino would have had 1,600 gambling positions, and allowed Illinois' 10 existing casinos to grow.

Earlier attempts at expanding gambling in Illinois have failed. Lawmakers approved a similar plan last year but did not send the plan to the governor, who had threatened a veto.

Quinn, who isn't opposed to gambling on principal, had said all along that he wanted a bill with stronger ethical protections. That includes barring the gambling industry from making political contributions.

"Everybody should be concerned about ethics in our state. We have two governors, my predecessors, both in jail. That's a pretty darn important issue for our state to have integrity at all times in every part of government, and that includes regulating casinos," he said Monday. "It must be airtight when it comes to protecting the public."

In response, lawmakers also filed a so-called trailer bill to address some of Quinn's concerns. However that wouldn't be considered unless the initial law is signed, and Quinn has said he'd rather get all the legislation signed at once.

___

The bill is SB1849.

Cheap air tickets and the European rules on ... - Travel and Leisure

The Europeans are in the same position as the Americans when it comes to the rules on compensation when flights are cancelled or passengers are refused boarding. As from 2004, there have been a unified set of rules to ensure that everyone gets the same treatment no matter which country they are flying in or to ? for the record, comparable rules apply to train services and other forms of public transport although the substance of the rules varies, e.g. the detail of rights on trains are not the same as those applying to maritime and river transport. This article only addresses the rights available to citizens of an EU Member State. Even if an American is a passenger on a European flight in Europe, none of these rights apply. The only remedies come under international treaties. However, Americans in Europe do get an indirect benefit.

The first and most obvious consumer right is to receive comprehensive information in a timely manner. If a problem arises hours before boarding is due, airlines should notify passengers by sms, Facebook or some other means to minimize inconvenience and avoid travel to the airport. Once you have arrived and presented yourself for boarding within the time limit, you?re entitled to compensation if the plane is overbooked and you cannot get a seat, even if you have cheap air tickets. The current practice is as follows. The airline first calls for volunteers who are prepared to give up their seats for an agreed amount of compensation. If no one volunteers, you must be offered a full refund or re-routing to your destination at the earliest possible time. For these purposes, a full refund includes the cost of flying you home if the purpose of your journey is now frustrated, e.g. you were flying to attend a friend?s wedding and you will miss it. If you choose a refund or re-routing, compensation must also be paid. This is up to 600 Euro depending on the distance you were due to fly. If your seat is upgraded, you cannot be asked to pay a higher ticket price. If you agree to accept a downgrade, the airline must refund the difference in seat price even if you had cheap air tickets.

Nevins Small Business Pledge ? small business owners pledging to create a new job the day Romney swears in

Home - by BigFurHat - August 26, 2012 - 09:00 America/New_York - 12 Comments

I?m 41

Russell Nevins ? I am Chief of Surgery at one of the largest hospitals in Las Vegas and lucky enough to be a small business owner. I am by no means independently wealthy, nor have any desire to pad a Swiss bank account on the back of anyone, even ?the middle class?.

The? introduction is based on a letter I sent to Bill O?Reilly. This explains the purpose of this web site.

I believe I can help Romney get elected. I call it the ?Nevins Small Business Pledge?. I, as a small business owner, am pledging to create a new job the day Romney swears in. I can do this from my taxes I won?t have to pay if Obama is elected again.

image

I believe we can get 100,000 plus other small businesses to do the same in the next 60 days.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama said Mitt Romney has locked himself into "extreme positions" on economic and social issues and would surely impose them if elected, trying to discredit his Republican rival at the biggest political moment of his life.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Obama said Romney lacks serious ideas, refuses to "own up" to the responsibilities of what it takes to be president, and deals in factually dishonest arguments that could soon haunt him in face-to-face debates.

Obama also offered a glimpse of how he would govern in a second term of divided government, insisting rosily that the forces of the election would help break Washington's stalemate. He said he would be willing to make a range of compromises with Republicans, confident there are some who would rather make deals than remain part of "one of the least productive Congresses in American history."

With the remarks, Obama set up a contrast between Romney, whom he cast as an extremist pushing staunchly conservative policies, and himself, by saying he would work across party lines. It was a seeming play for the independent voters who decide close elections and tell pollsters they want to see the often-gridlocked politicians in Washington solve the nation's problems.

Mainly, Obama was intent on countering Romney even before his challenger got to the Republican National Convention, which starts Monday in Tampa, Fla. In doing so, the president depicted his opponent as having accumulated ideas far outside the mainstream with no room to turn back.

"I can't speak to Gov. Romney's motivations," Obama said. "What I can say is that he has signed up for positions, extreme positions, that are very consistent with positions that a number of House Republicans have taken. And whether he actually believes in those or not, I have no doubt that he would carry forward some of the things that he's talked about."

Obama spoke to the AP on Thursday before heading off to a long weekend with his family at Camp David, the secluded presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains.

The president was at ease but doggedly on script, steering even personal-themed questions about Romney and running mate Paul Ryan into answers about starkly different visions for helping the middle class.

Romney, a successful former executive of a private equity firm and one-time Massachusetts governor, will introduce himself to a TV audience of millions next Thursday as he takes the convention stage to accept his party's presidential nomination. He has offered himself as a business-minded alternative to Obama and has seized on voter concerns about joblessness and the direction of the nation.

Nearly 10 weeks before Election Day, the race is remarkably stable and reflective of a sharply divided nation, with registered voters about evenly split on their choice and nearly a quarter of them unsure or still willing to change their mind. Across the interview, Obama's messages often seemed directed at moderate and independent voters whose sway could make the difference.

Obama's depiction of a Romney presidency grew most pointed when he was asked if his Republican challenger has no core, as one of Obama's top advisers once put it.

The president suggested that whatever Romney really stands for in life is secondary to the promises Romney has made in the campaign.

In explaining his accusation of "extreme" positions, the president cited Romney's call for across-the-board tax cuts that Obama said would mostly help the rich at the expense of everyone else and cost the nation $5 trillion. Obama singled out Romney's opposition to tax credits for producers of wind energy, the kind of issue that carries large political resonance in a battleground state such as Iowa.

And Obama alluded to the provocative issue of abortion, suddenly thrust to the fore this week when Republican Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin said the female body has a way to "shut that whole thing down" when a woman is the victim of "legitimate rape."

The Republican platform in Tampa calls for a ban on abortion with no specific exceptions for rape or other circumstances. Obama predicted that a President Romney would not "stand in the way" if Congress gave him a bill that stripped away women's control over their reproductive health.

Romney is on record, however, as not opposing abortion in cases of rape and incest or if it will save the mother's life.

Polling shows social issues such as abortion represent perhaps Obama's best opportunity to draw support from Romney. Obama already holds a broad lead as the candidate more trusted to handle those social issues among Democrats and independents. The issue is one of Romney's biggest vulnerabilities among moderate and liberal Republicans.

Obama also sought to chip away at Romney's trustworthiness, taking fresh shots at Romney's refusal to release years of tax returns for public inspection. He said that position was indicative of a candidate who has a "lack of willingness to take responsibility for what this job entails."

Yet it is the economy that has driven this election and has dominated Obama's message of a middle-class revival.

"We aren't where we need to be. Everybody agrees with that," said Obama, who inherited an economy in free fall and now bears responsibility for a recovery that remains weak. "But Gov. Romney's policies would make things worse for middle-class families and offer no prospect for long-term opportunity for those striving to get into the middle class," the president said.

A Romney spokesman, Ryan Williams, jumped on Obama's account in the interview that the economy clearly needs to get better. "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan agree," Williams said. "The American people know they aren't better off than they were four years ago."

Obama holds a decisive advantage over Romney when Americans are asked who better understands their daily woes. Yet nearly two-thirds of people in a new AP-GfK poll say the economy is in poor shape, and 60 percent say the country is headed in the wrong direction.

Obama expressed confidence that even voters whose lives have not improved during his term will stick with him as they assess the two candidates.

"If they saw Gov. Romney offering serious proposals that offered some sort of concrete ways in which middle-class families would be helped, then I could understand them thinking about that choice," Obama said. "But that's not what's happening."

And therein lies the central case that Obama made in the interview, as he has made for months, and as he will again at his own party's convention in Charlotte, N.C., in early September.

Obama said he is the candidate whose policies have historically helped the middle class on issues that people care about and that shape the economy ? education, manufacturing, science and research, Medicare, debt reduction, tax rates, health care, consumer protection, college aid, energy.

Williams, the Romney spokesman, responded that Obama has piled up national debt and presided over high unemployment. "Too many middle-class families are going to sleep each night worried," he said. "This may be the best President Obama can do, but it's not the best America can do."

The moment that could finally shake up a close race could come in the three debates Obama and Romney hold in October. The president said Romney could run into trouble because of arguments that are not backed up by facts, citing a widely debunked television ad campaign in which Romney accuses Obama of gutting the work requirement in the federal welfare law.

"It will be a little tougher to defend face-to-face," Obama said.

Obama's view of a different second-term dynamic in Washington, even if both he and House Republicans retain power, seems a stretch given the stalemated politics of a divided government. He said two changes ? the facts that "the American people will have voted," and that Republicans will no longer need to be focused on beating him ? could lead to better conditions for deal-making.

If Republicans are willing, Obama said, "I'm prepared to make a whole range of compromises" that could even rankle his own party. But he did not get specific.

The 25-minute interview, conducted in the library of the White House residence, was part of a multi-faceted campaign by Obama's team to snag some of the spotlight during Romney's big week. Obama denied the notion, widely if quietly held in political circles, that the fiercely competitive president is also driven to beat Romney because he does not hold him in high regard.

"I don't really know him well," Obama said. "The big arguments that I have with Gov. Romney have to do with where we take this country forward."

Always keep an eye on your water usage by checking for leaky faucets. Leaky faucets should be repaired or replaced quickly to avoid excess water usage that is both wasteful and expensive. Lower prices usually mean that the quality of the work and the materials is also lower.

If you?re thinking about doing home improvement work, get a home inspection first. If you?ve owned your home for at least a decade there may be some damage that could affect the safety of your home. Fort Bend Lifestyles & Homes magazine ? Form, Function, Comfort ...

Houston?s sixth Pink Ribbon House?, a designer showcase home built to ?raise the roof? for breast cancer research at The Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), did just that. Established in 2003 by the Breast Center Advisory Council at BCM, the Pink Ribbon House? (PRH) project raises funds and awareness for breast cancer research and patient care at BCM through the design, decorating and touring of showcase homes. Since its founding, more than $2.8 million has been raised for breast cancer research at BCM.

Chair of this year?s event, Debby Leighton, and co-chair Mary Sapp Fischer share, ?The story surrounding this year?s house is a combination of perfect timing, personal connections, and family connections.? In previous years, the PRH was built as a spec home, but this year, for the first time, it was built as a custom home designed by Brad Hollenbeck for a young family with three small children.

Homeowners Jeff and Amy Miers couldn?t have been happier. ?We?re thrilled to be building the home of our dreams while also supporting a cause that makes a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of so many women and their families,? says Amy. Jeff adds, ?This land has special meaning for our family. Several years ago, we purchased the Memorial area house that my grandparents built and lived in since 1960. We hope to live here at least as long as my grandparents, which was more than 50 years.?

The couple salvaged several features from the previous home, including wood from a tree Jeff?s grandparents planted when they bought the house in 1959. The homeowners also repurposed hardwood floors for the office, and 1950?s pink tile and hardware for one of the bedroom suites. The entire structure of the original house ? including slab, appliances, light fixtures and more ? was donated to Habitat for Humanity, which will either recycle the material or use it in the construction of a new home for a family in need.

Jeff and Amy worked closely with an outstanding team of interior designers to create a home for their growing family now and in the years to come. However, they also recognized that this was a showcase home and compromised in many ways to make sure the finished product would represent the creativity and talents of the design teams.

Designed by Hollenbeck Architects, the 2012 Pink Ribbon House? was constructed by Levitt Partnership, Ltd. in a French Country style. The 5,000-square-foot residence features a stone and stucco exterior with shutters, five bedrooms, five-and-a-half bathrooms, two studies and three fireplaces, as well as a summer kitchen, playroom, three-car garage, game room, and dining room that opens up to a courtyard with a water feature. An impressive list of Houston designers helped to decorate the home and yard, and each took an area as their focus incorporating not only their own unique design touches, but also making sure to keep the entire home?s aesthetic as a dominant influence.

The outdoor space is extraordinary, lending undeniable curb appeal. Strong Landscaping has designed Houston yards since 2004 and their experience is not lost here. The outdoor setting of the PRH is a beautiful corner lot surrounded by magnificent oak trees. Strong explains, ?We wanted to give the yard its own personality by feeding off the home?s French Country flair, so we created a simple tiered design featuring Encore azaleas, miniature boxwood and mini-mondo grass with strategically placed flagstone walkways and landings that are not only functional, but provide interest to the yard.? The courtyard off the formal dining room ? accented with a decorative iron arch and gate as well as a beautiful water urn ? can be enjoyed not only by those sitting in this peaceful area, but also by those in the dining area. The back patio, landing area and side garden are accented with large French Anduze pots planted with ferns and fruit trees.

The home?s exterior design also is extraordinary. Valerie Cook of Valerie Cook Designs, Inc. discloses, ?The early inspiration for the architectural design for this house was the client?s desire to have courtyards off both the living room and quarters and a large front porch. Through the building process an additional courtyard was added off the dining room. Having the house located on a corner lot is another special feature.? She also says that the ?hideaway? staircase and the placement of the windows reflect a gentle playfulness by the architect ? while still maintaining a formality. The French Country style of the house, the paint colors, and the exterior and courtyard stone selections were made to be consistent with this feeling. Valerie adds, ?My design of the custom shutters and door hardware selections throughout the house continue the formal, rich and inviting look that the clients desired. Working in conjunction with the home?s architect, Brad Hollenbeck, enabled me to retain his vision.?

Trisha Dodson of Dodson & Daughter designed the main entry, dining room and powder room. This is the third Pink Ribbon house Trisha has helped to design. She describes the style as comfortable and inviting, yet sophisticated, and she likes to incorporate architectural antiques when the look allows. She explains, ?I wanted to create an inviting entry that would flow into the surrounding rooms. In the dining room the lighting and furniture give a look that is elegant without formality. I used handcrafted wallpaper in the powder room to add the desired pizzazz to the small space.?

Julia Blailock of Blailock Design was responsible for the kitchen, breakfast and family room, along with the outdoor loggia. ?Our goal was to create a flowing open concept space that, while sharing distinct separate functions, would seamlessly flow together in a unified whole.? Interest was created by having different planes in the cabinetry, further accentuated with different finishes and countertop selections. The focus of the family room is the stone fireplace and media cabinet, beautifully finished by Segreto Finishes. The tall ceilings with stained beams add loftiness to the room, and the straight paneled drapery compliments this feeling.

The mudroom and first floor study were designed by the daughter-in-law and mother-in-law team of Molly Sullivan Levitt and Mollie Oshman of Molly Mollie Interior Design. Their concept statement was, ?Even though our two rooms are exceptionally practical spaces, we wanted our design to be anything but.? Though an ?elegant mudroom? may sound like an oxymoron, that?s exactly what they achieved. The pair also made sure that everything they selected for their two adjoining spaces was in keeping with the home?s architectural style. Mollie Oshman shares, ?From the French-inspired cabinet door designs and antique fabric under glass in the study to the faux finishing and scripted names beneath the family?s bank of ?elegant lockers? in the mudroom, these rooms are an inviting and welcoming transition to the main areas of the home.? Sadly, Molly Levitt passed away unexpectedly in March just before the home opened. Mollie Oshman continues to run their business in Molly?s spirit, honor and dedication.

In addition to the home?s exterior, the playroom and the quarters (bed/bath) were designed by Valerie Cook. In the playroom, which is usually intended for children, Valerie admits she didn?t want this multipurpose space to be age-specific, but rather in keeping with the overall feel of the home: ?I designed it to be fun for the children now and fun for them in later years.? A custom built-in bookcase design was based on the clients? request for a piece that encompasses specific needs while still having something that was a bit out of the ?norm.? Valerie accomplished this by adding metal grid fronts on the cabinet doors and the cabinet finish. Whimsical pops of color, together with her concept for the crown molding and wall faux finish ? inspired by an Escheresque origami art installation ? add to a room that a child or adult would be comfortable in.

For the design in the quarters area of the home, Valerie wanted to create coziness, but with a little bit of ?glam? and the overall feel of a studio apartment. To accomplish this she used silver fabrics for the upholstery and window treatments, as well as stylish, glitzy light fixtures. She clarifies, ?The plaster faux-finished walls, bedding and chair style are a perfect mix of old and new that the clients wanted, and the tile and countertop selections for the bathroom and?kitchenette maintain the design and sophistication of these two spaces.?

Bennett Design Group (BDG), founded by Belinda Bennett, took to task the upstairs family room. Belinda recounts that in preparation for the new house, the owners heartbreakingly cut down one of the original trees ? one that was very meaningful to the family. She says, ?They loved watching squirrels run up and down the large branches of the beautiful tree.? The design team salvaged the large trunk and branches to create a ceiling covered in spliced branches making an interesting texture. Keeping this memory close at hand by recycling it brings new life to their family space. BDG constructed a palette of naturally-inspired elements around the tree of life which served as the central theme of this room?s design.

Julie Dodson, also of Dodson & Daughter, was in charge of designing the master bedroom and bath, along with the mid-level study of the home. This young, hip designer ? who describes her work as ?casual glam?? says, ?Upon my first meeting with homeowner Amy Miers, I paid super close attention to her wardrobe. She was wearing a soft, blushy-peach pleated skirt and a cream-colored top with pearls. Very feminine, which was right up my alley!? Julie was also inspired by wallpaper they found at David Sutherland from Fromental, which she says gave her direction. Because she also wanted the space to reflect a masculine energy for Jeff, she chose a dark wall and ceiling color. Additionally, both masculine and feminine textures were used for balance and interest.

The three children?s rooms and the utility room were completed by Christine Ho of Cho Interiors. She describes her style as classic, timeless, and modern. This style is evident in these rooms, yet each room is also uniquely fun and reflective of each child?s personality and taste. She explains, ?I wanted to give the homeowners a timeless design so that they wouldn?t have to redesign their kids? rooms in a couple of years as the children grow older.? Instead, she selected a classic background and used accessories to create the theme of the room. From the eldest sibling, who is more punk rock-like, to the second child, who is more of a ballerina at heart, to the youngest boy, who likes toy cars and hot air balloons, each room is very different reflecting each child?s emerging personality.

As for the utility room, Christine says, ?I designed the utility room by focusing on the function of this room first. This utilitarian space often gets ignored, yet oddly enough this room is used quite often. I wanted to make sure that the space simplifies household chores while flowing with the rest of the house design.?

The finishes throughout the home are by Leslie Sinclair of Segreto Finishes. Leslie?s philosophy in this home and in all of her designs rests upon the idea that ?upon entering a room, your eyes should not draw a distinction to one element or finish but you should see the surroundings as a whole.? The palette she developed for this project complemented the home?s architecture and overall design. A combination of the cabinet, floor and wall finishes beautifully connect the furnishings, fabrics and surfaces throughout the home, even though each space is decorated by a different designer.

Other unique architectural details of this home are: front and back porches with arched beams, a two-story entry with an antique-beam pinwheel ceiling treatment, and the study connecting the home?s curved staircase and master bedroom.

This year, the Pink Ribbon House? tour ended on a very high note, bringing in more than $470,000 for research and patient care at the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at Baylor College of Medicine (bcm.edu/breastcenter). The success of the event is attributed to the camaraderie of the team of volunteers, builders, designers and the homeowners who devote countless hours to organizing the event that raises funds and awareness for a very important cause ? breast cancer. The 2012 Pink Ribbon Home is a French Country dream situated on a large corner lot and shaded by beautifully groomed oak trees.

The two-story entry with its antique-beam pinwheel ceiling treatment creates an inviting entry that flows effortlessly into the surrounding rooms.

With its warm wood ceiling, stone walls and fireplace, comfortable furniture and dramatic lighting and drapes, it?s hard to believe this outdoor room is actually outdoors!

Simplicity of design and form make a bold statement in the breakfast room. The circular window seat with its plush pillows, the glass table top with its Lucite base, the soft lines of the contemporary chairs and even the singular blue rose on the wall each lend warmth and comfort to this morning place.

In the kitchen, interest was created by having different planes in the cabinetry, accentuated with different finishes and different countertop selections. The exposed beams, the dropped lighting and the furniture afford just the right touch of drama.

A mudroom can be elegant, as is evident here. Embellished lockers, a pleated table skirt and a gilded mirror help to achieve this sophistication, which spills over into the home office just beyond.

Taking care of the home?s business just seems a little more stylish in this office. Natural light from the window and the chic globe chandelier allow ample lighting above the desk. Smart pleats, extra long drawers and lots of counter and cabinet space keep things both neat and tasteful.

In the home?s formal dining room, the lighting and furniture present a look that is sophisticated and graceful without formality. With the beautiful views from the picture windows and French doors, it?s as enjoyable and feasible to serve breakfast here as well as a formal family dinner.

In this baby boy?s room, baby blues and white are accented with pops of sage green in the drapes and brick red in the rug. The geometric lines of the light fixture add a masculine touch, while the fabric wall behind the bed and the clouds in the recessed ceiling keep things baby soft.

Pretty pink accents, girlish white lace and a glamorous chandelier provide soft femininity to this girl?s room. The diagonal pattern on the recessed ceiling, the pinboard and the drapes ties together the room?s design.

With pastel mint and blue as a backdrop, this white canopy bed bursts with brightness and youthful energy. The mirrored chest of drawers reflects the dramatic combination, while hot pink accent pillows provide just the right pop of color.

This master bedroom serves as a sanctuary for the homeowners. Soft, calming neutrals and a mixture of textures lend both masculine and feminine energy to the space.

Spa-like elegance is the theme in the master bath. The chevron tile pattern, a deep soaking tub and glamorous lighting are tranquil elements of design that go a long way when it?s time to wind down.
