The Vestavia City Council approved a resolution at its Sept. 26 meeting that would allow the mayor to enter into a contract with Chase Commercial Realty Inc. to sell some commercial property in the city.
Mayor Albert ?Butch? Zaragoza said there were a couple of properties up for sale and that he wanted to make sure to do well on the properties.
Randy Robertson, city manager, said the city had been working with two real estate corporations and that choosing Chase Commercial was in the city?s best interest.
?It is the second largest real estate agency in the Southeast, and it has an aggressive market plan that we agreed with,? Robertson said.
Under the approved resolution, Vestavia Hills would partner with Chase Commercial Realty in a six-month contract to sell city property, with Chase Commercial taking five percent of the profit.
In other city business, the council approved a resolution allowing the mayor to file an application with the Alabama Department of Transportation to improve roads, including heavily-traveled Rocky Ridge Road.
Zaragoza stated several concerns about Rocky Ridge Road, saying it was in need of more lights and a better clear zone. A clear zone is the safe area on the shoulder of the road for vehicles that have to pull off the road during emergencies.
?City dollars would not cover the cost that is needed to fix the road,? Zaragoza said.
A major concern for the council was if there was good reason to partner with ALDOT on the road improvement projects.
Councilman John Henley asked if ALDOT would have enough funds to help the city.
Zaragoza said ALDOT would be able to cover the costs. He said 80 percent of the cost would be covered by the city, with the remaining balance coming from ALDOT.
Both resolutions passed in a 4-0 vote. Councilman George B. Pierce was absent from the meeting due to the birth of his grandchild.
