Google Glass Application Filed With FCC - Business Insider

Google has filed an application for Google Glass, its futuristic, Internet-connected headset, has arrived at the Federal Communications Commission, according to Engadget.

The FCC approves electronic devices that emit radio waves, making it a bureaucratic hoop that most new gadgets must jump through.?

The Explorer Edition of the glasses has both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios, requiring FCC review.

The filing means that the search giant is one step closer to shipping developer versions of the wearable technology, which is slated to arrive at some point this year.?

Engadget also noticed a reference to an "integral vibrating element that provides audio to the user via contact with the user's head," which the blog says likely relates to a?bone-conduction patent?from earlier this month.?("Bone conduction" is where sound is transmitted through the bones of the skull, another way humans hear sounds besides audio waves.)

A serious crash on the I-495 Beltway, early Wednesday.

Seven people, including four firefighters, were seriously hurt in a major crash that all but blocked the Beltway early Wednesday outside Washington, D.C.

A fire truck was responding to an accident on southbound I-495/I-95 at about 3 a.m. ET when it was struck by another vehicle, said Corporal Clinton Copeland of the Prince George?s County Police Department in Maryland.

?This is going to be a major, major problem for drivers this morning,? he said, adding that only one lane on either side of the scene was open to traffic as at 5:30 a.m. ET.

The fire truck was left on its side following the crash, according to a picture taken by a passerby and shared on Twitter by NBC4's Melissa Mollet.

A tractor trailer and an SUV were the other vehicles involved in the crash, NBCWashington.com reported.

It said the tractor trailer rear-ended the fire truck, citing Prince George?s County Fire Chief Marc Bashoor.

The accident involving the fire truck happened on the inner loop of the Beltway near the eastbound exit?for the John Hanson Highway.

Nexus 4 shows up for sale on Best Buy's website, T-Mobile contract in tow

The Nexus 4 has just show up for sale on Best Buy's website, with familiar T-Mobile on-contract pricing of $199.99. In typical Best Buy fashion, the off-contract price of the phone has been inflated, showing $599.99 to buy the device outright. This is something Best Buy (and other retailers) does to both cover its overhead and most importantly compel people to sign 2-year contracts, and is nothing new for the Nexus 4.

This isn't likely to be any special deal between Google and Best Buy to offer the device though, as you can bet that Google would rather secure supply for its own store before branching out to yet another retailer. This is probably just T-Mobile's current deals to resell handsets and service with Best Buy extending to the new handset. New stock heading to a wider range of T-Mobile stores means it is ready to also let resellers sell the device on its behalf.

Although not many people are likely to head to Best Buy to pick it up, the Nexus 4 is certainly getting a little more exposure as these new listings arrive. Let's just hope that Google can get its own supply channels sorted out so it can offer the device through the Play Store once again.

Apple pulls Vine from App Store Featured section after porn appears in Editor's Picks

Apple has pulled Vine from the Featured section of the App Store after a pornagraphic video was featured in the Editor?s Picks section of the app. While Vine?s porn issues have been widely discussed, Apple had taken no action until today.

Vine was removed from the Featured section despite the fact that most apps spend at least a full week there. According to TechCrunch, Twitter, which owns Vine, has responded to the controversy, saying:

The presence of nudity or porn on media-based social networks is expected, but the featuring of such content is a step over the line. Twitter later explained that it was ?human error? that caused the porn slip-up.

Last week, the 500px app was removed from the App Store following a controversy with nude photos, only to return today after making changes including adding a mature rating.

Vine has already started to block certain tags in order to filter out pornography, we'll have to see if their efforts will be enough to keep Apple from pulling it.

The second floor consists of a dining room and a small locked bedroom where Amondar and some of the higher ranking members sleeps. The third floor is Amondar 's office and he can sometimes be found at his desk during daytime. There is some steel armor to be found in this room.

Singer Frank Ocean wants Chris Brown charged over brawl

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rising R&B artist Frank Ocean wants fellow singer Chris Brown prosecuted following a brawl over a parking space at a Los Angeles-area recording studio, authorities said on Monday.

Brown is serving five years probation for assaulting his on-and-off girlfriend Rihanna in 2009 and risks having his probation revoked should charges be filed.

In the incident on Sunday, sheriff's deputies responded to a call about a fight involving six men in West Hollywood. The deputies cited witnesses as saying that the Grammy-winning Brown, 23, punched Ocean during the brief altercation.

No charges have yet been filed, but Ocean "is desirous of prosecution in this incident," said Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.

Ocean, 25, who is nominated for best new artist and best record for "Thinkin Bout You" at the Grammys in February, said on Twitter on Sunday night that he "got jumped by Chris and a couple guys." He said this resulted in a cut finger.

A representative for Brown has yet to comment.

The "Look at me Now" singer has attempted to rebuild his career and public image since 2009, but his entourage and that of Canadian rapper Drake were involved in a June 2012 brawl in a New York nightclub. No arrests or charges were brought in that case.

Brown and Ocean are both nominated in the best urban contemporary album category at the Grammys, which take place on February 10 in Los Angeles.

Great Books for Kids and Teens: It's Monday 1/30! What Are You ...

We had a very busy week here! We took our sons and two friends up to the Poconos to my mom's house for a weekend of snowboarding, to celebrate my son's 15th birthday. The boys all had a blast, and I finally got some reading time, in front of the fire in the condo!

Here's what we read last week:

• I finished Pigs in Heaven by Barbara Kingsolver and loved it even more than the first novel, The Bean Trees. I never wanted it to end, and days later, I am still thinking about Taylor and Turtle. Two of the best books I have ever read!
• I am now reading I Still Dream About You by Fannie Flagg, this month's selection for one of my book groups. It's well-written and I am enjoying it, but Pigs in Heaven kind of ruined me for any other novel right now! I did get a lot of reading time in this weekend while the kids were snowboarding, though.
• I also slipped in a quick little book, Tales from Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan. I don't quite know how to describe it because it is so unique and quirky. I see that it is officially categorized as a children's/teen book (one review says grade 4 and up; another says grades 7-12), but some of the wit and irony is clearly aimed at adults. I will try to review it this week, so I can describe it more fully. Anyway, I liked it!
• My husband, Ken, is reading The Likeness by Tana French. He still thinks the plot of this one is a bit far-fetched, but he's enjoying the excellent writing and sometimes even laughs out loud!
• Jamie, 18, had a busy week with school and snowboarding, but he continued to read Shaman's Crossing, Book 1 of the Soldier's Son trilogy by Robin Hobb. He says it's OK, but the fantasy world in this novel has guns and he prefers fantasy worlds that are pre-gun.
• Craig, 15, is still reading The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros for his freshman lit class.

We were so busy last week that I didn't have time to write any reviews, but I did FINALLY sign up for some 2013 reading challenges - check out my choices and let me know what you have signed up for.

Use Exfoliating Bath Gloves to Clean Fruits and Vegetables

Before you cook or eat fresh fruits and vegetables, you should give them a good scrub first under running water. Instead of buying pricey special "vegetable cleaning gloves" or wasting a ton of paper towels, try a cheaper option that gives you the same thing: exfoliating "bath gloves" that are available in almost any grocery or department store.

Most vegetable cleaning gloves will set you back around $10 (more if you buy them in a department or kitchen store, as much as $20), but the same product, just branded for use in the shower or bath, are much cheaper, around $2 each online, and the ones I've seen at my local supermarket are around $5. (Just steer clear of the fancy branded ones, they can get much more expensive.) They're both just rough enough to scrub down fruits and vegetables without damaging them, and they can be tossed in the washer or dishwasher for cleaning.

Just using the gloves is an easy and fast way to prep your fruits and veggies to eat, but there's no reason to pay more for the ones branded for kitchen use. As long as you don't use your veggie gloves in the shower, you'll be okay.

As the Middle East experiences its worst winter storms in 20 years, international disaster relief organization, ShelterBox, is responding to the need for winterized shelter and other life saving supplies among the Syrian refugees living in Lebanon.

ShelterBox responds following disasters such as earthquake, flood, tsunami, hurricane, cyclone or conflict by delivering boxes of aid. Each box contains a disaster relief tent, stove, water filtration system, blankets and other items necessary to help families live independently and with dignity in the months following disaster.

ShelterBox was one of the first international relief organizations to respond to the Lebanese government?s request for aid, having permission from the Minister of Social Affairs for an agreed quantity of ShelterBoxes to be sent to Lebanon specifically for Syrian refugees.

Members of the highly trained ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) are assessing the need for additional winterized shelter and emergency aid as refugees continue to enter the country.

SRT member Fiona McElroy described the living conditions among refugees as ?unimaginable,? as many can?t afford proper shelter and protection from the freezing temperatures. Syrian families have built makeshift shelters with whatever materials available, as many have no other option.

?It?s not until you look among the communities such as Barelias district that the truth begins to reveal itself,? McElroy said. ?Syrian refugees are the hidden homeless in Lebanon.?

ShelterBox first responded to the Syrian refugee crisis in October 2012, by delivering 500 boxes of winterized aid to the Domiz refugee camp in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, and have continued to work in the neighboring countries to which many Syrians have fled.

By December 2012, ShelterBox aid crossed into Syria and was distributed to 710 families living families living in the Al-Salameh camp near the Turkey-Syria border.

ShelterBox is also responding to the typhoon in the Philippines, bushfires in Australia and flooding in Nigeria.

MAUMEE -- At the Lucas County Recreation Center in Maumee, the annual antique show and sale is taking place to raise money for the?Maumee Valley Historical Society.

There are over 90 dealers from 16 states. There is something for beginner collectors as well as the advanced collector.

Amy Danforth, the special events coordinator at the Maumee Valley Historical Society commented about the vendors saying, "just walking around, the dealers are so knowledgeable and very willing to talk with you about any of your antique concerns or to answer questions about things that you do not even know what they are?.you might find out grandma?s jewelry that you thought was gaudy, is actually worth quite a lot."

The antique show is open Sunday, January 27, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Facebook is preventing Twitter's Vine from finding friends

Twitter's Vine officially launched on Thursday and things have already been fairly rough for the?new video-sharing service. First we noticed that it seems to lack any proper privacy settings or features and now it seems as if Facebook's preventing Vine from finding any friends.

As the Verge's Jeff Blagdon points out, some Twitter users are calling attention to an error message which appears when they attempt to find Facebook friends on Vine. "Vine is not authorized to make this Facebook request," the message explains.

We reached out to both Facebook and Twitter to find out more about this error message. A Twitter spokesperson responded with a polite message pointing us to a post on the official Facebook developers blog. (Yes, yes. This made us chuckle for a moment, too.)

In the blog post, Facebook's Justin Osofsky, director of platform partnerships and operations, clarifies some of the social network's platform policies.?He basically explains that most apps use Facebook's platform to give people an easy way to log into apps, easily share content and so on. But, he writes, there is a small number of apps which are "using Facebook to either replicate [its] functionality or bootstrap their growth in a way that creates little value for people on Facebook."

"[W]e?ve had policies against this that we are further clarifying today," he writes, linking to the social network's platform policies page, which explains why Vine's cut off:

Facebook Platform enables developers to build personalized, social experiences via the Graph API and related APIs. If you use any Facebook APIs to build personalized or social experiences, you must also enable people to easily share their experiences back with people on Facebook. [...]?You may not use Facebook Platform to promote, or to export user data to, a product or service that replicates a core Facebook product or service without our permission.

In other words: No, Vine. You can't make friends by leaning on Facebook.

Of course, this siliness?is just the latest skirmish in a long battle over "friends" between Facebook and Twitter.?Facebook blocked Twitter's access to the social network's in-app friend finder in mid-2010 and Twitter later killed Instagram's ability to find friends easily. (Instagram, as you may remember, is now owned by Facebook.

Guess it's Twitter's turn to do something again.

Quantum communication: Each photon counts

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Ultrafast, efficient, and reliable single-photon detectors are among the most sought-after components in photonics and quantum communication, which have not yet reached maturity for practical application. Physicist Dr. Wolfram Pernice of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), in cooperation with colleagues at Yale University, Boston University, and Moscow State Pedagogical University, achieved the decisive breakthrough by integrating single-photon detectors with nanophotonic chips. The detector combines near-unity detection efficiency with high timing resolution and has a very low error rate.

The results have been published by Nature Communications.

Without reliable detection of single photons, it is impossible to make real use of the latest advances in optical data transmission or quantum computation; it is like having no analog-digital converter in a conventional computer to determine whether the applied voltage stands for 0 or 1. Although a number of different single-photon detector models have been developed over the past few years, thus far, none have provided satisfactory performance.

Several new ideas and advanced developments went into the prototype developed within the "Integrated Quantum Photonics" project at the DFG Center of Functional Nanostructures (CFN). The new single-photon detector, tested in the telecommunications wavelength range, achieves a previously unattained detection efficiency of 91%.

The detector was realized by fabricating superconducting nanowires directly on top of a nanophotonic waveguide. This geometry can be compared to a tube that conducts light, around which a wire in a superconducting state is wound and, as such, has no electric resistivity. The nanometer-sized wire made of niobium nitride absorbs photons that propagate along the waveguide. When a photon is absorbed, superconductivity is lost, which is detected as an electric signal. The longer the tube, the higher is the detection probability. The lengths involved are in the micrometer range.

A special feature of the detector is its direct installation on the chip, which allows for it to be replicated at random. The single-photon detectors built thus far were stand-alone units, which were connected to chips with optical fibers. Arrangements of that type suffer from photons being lost in the fiber connection or being absorbed in other ways. These loss channels do not exist in the detector that is now fully embedded in a silicon photonic circuit. In addition to high detection efficiency, this gives rise to a remarkably low dark count rate. Dark counts arise when a photon is detected erroneously: for instance, because of a spontaneous emission, an alpha particle, or a spurious field. The new design also provides ultrashort timing jitter of 18 picoseconds, which is 18 times 10-12 seconds.

The novel solution also makes it possible to integrate several hundreds of these detectors on a single chip. This is a basic precondition for future use in optical quantum computers.

The detector demonstrated in this study was designed to work at wavelengths in the Telekom bandwidth. The same detector architecture can also be used for wavelengths in the range of visible light. This would allow the principle to be employed in analyses of all structures that emit little light, i.e., photons, such as single molecules or bacteria. ?

Hackers take over sentencing commission website

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The hacker-activist group Anonymous says it hijacked the website of the U.S. Sentencing Commission to avenge the death of Aaron Swartz, an Internet activist who committed suicide.

The website of the commission, an independent agency of the judicial branch, was taken over early Saturday and replaced with a message warning that when Swartz killed himself two weeks ago "a line was crossed."

The hackers say they've infiltrated several government computer systems and copied secret information that they now threaten to make public.

Family and friends of Swartz, who helped create Reddit and RSS, say he killed himself after he was hounded by federal prosecutors. Officials say he helped post millions of court documents for free online and that he illegally downloaded millions of academic articles from an online clearinghouse.

Belkin, a private company based in Playa Vista, Calif., with operations and sales in more than 100 countries, today announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Cisco?s Home Networking Business Unit, including its proven products, technology, well-known Linksys brand and talented employees. With global operations, Linksys? main office is located in Irvine, Calif.

Jobless claims drop to five-year low

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell to its lowest since the early days of the 2007-09 recession, a hopeful sign for the sluggish labor market.?

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 330,000, the lowest level since January 2008, the Labor Department said on Thursday.?

Claims have now fallen for two straight weeks, suggesting that if employers are concerned tax hikes enacted this year will affect consumer demand, this is not leading to more layoffs.?

Analysts polled by Reuters had expected claims to rise to 355,000 last week.?

Economists have cautioned about reading too deeply into this month's figures, as claims tend to be volatile around this time of the year. This is because of large swings in the model used by the department to iron out seasonal fluctuations.?

A measure of labor market trends nonetheless pointed to an improvement in the labor market's health. The four-week moving average for new claims fell 8,250 to 351,750, the lowest since March 2008.?

A Labor Department analyst said claims data were estimated for three states last week, but there was nothing unusual in the state level data.?

Claims are now at roughly the same level they were in much of 2006 and 2007. Claims started trending higher around December 2007, the month that the country's recession began.?

However, while employers have pulled back on layoffs, they have only added jobs to the economy at a lackluster pace.?

Employers adding 155,000 new positions in December and the unemployment rate held steady at 7.8 percent.?

Job gains averaged 153,000 jobs per month in 2012, little changed from 2011. The sluggish labor market and subdued inflation pressures appear likely to keep the Federal Reserve on its ultra easy monetary policy course.?

The claims report showed the number of people still receiving benefits under regular state programs after an initial week of aid dropped 71,000 to 3.16 million in the week ended January 12.?

Manila, Philippines ? We?ve all heard about cyber-bullying and more so, lately, here in our country ? a bill is being passed about it but as unpleasant as its effects are on people, there are still those who aren?t too keen about passing the law that would see perpetrators serving time in the slammer!?

Well, back on the subject. Here?s an update on this. The Philippine government has asked the Supreme Court to lift the temporary restraining order (TRO) on the controversial Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, and junk 15 petitions contesting the law. According to GMA News Online last Monday, the government, through the country?s Office of the Solicitor General (OSG), argue the issuance of the temporary restraining order on the implementation of cybercrime law ?should not be made to rest merely on purely legal arguments, without evidence being introduced, for or against the validity of a challenged statute?.

Now with the TRO lifted there again is the uproar on the Cyber Crimes law in the land. But I ask myself, why not, really? The law only ?regulates and penalizes? acts defined as cybercrime such as hacking and believe me I for one would love to see those perennial hackers of mine take on some punishment.

The Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, officially recorded as Republic Act No. 10175, is a law in the Philippines approved on 12 September 2012. It aims to address legal issues concerning online interactions and the Internet in the Philippines. Among the cybercrime offenses included in the bill are cybersquatting, cybersex, child pornography, identity theft, illegal access to data and libel.

While hailed for penalizing illegal acts done via the internet that were not covered by old laws, the act has been criticized for its provision on criminalizing libel, which is perceived to be a curtailment in freedom of expression. The Philippines? Cybercrime Prevention Act had been suspended for 120 days following restraining order against it by the Supreme Court in October. The law had come under fire for its vague definition of online libel, violation of personal rights and tough legal penalties for Internet defamation.

The cyber law her won?t infringe on people from using the Internet and expressing their thoughts. It?s not a ?gag order.? If any, this will give us a blanket of protection. It?s not out to curtail one?s freedom of speech it?s going against ?abusers? of that freedom. In my honest opinion, I AM ALL FOR IT. If only for the fact that I?m a constant target of every kind of cyber bullying, well I?ve had my accounts (email, Facebook even my phones!) hacked over and over again.

Cybercrime to address the perennial crimes spawned by the Internet such as online pornography and cyber prostitution. Those evil doers are who the cyber bill should be for. Freedom of expression shouldn?t mean freedom to hack away at anybody?s emails, social media site profiles or posting personal videos and malicious images. And it?s no doubt we need a law on.
